This application offers access to a comprehensive collection of over 1,650 high-resolution images depicting more than 631 marine species within the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. It includes detailed ecological information for over 130 species. Users can browse the database by common or scientific names across all species, or filter by broad functional groups such as birds, marine mammals, fishes, invertebrates, and algae.

The app is designed to be lightweight and can be downloaded via cellular data. Each image is downloaded on demand and is thereafter stored locally on the device for quick access. Users also have the option to share their preferred images through platforms like Twitter and email.

The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, one of the country’s most remarkable marine protected areas, boasts a diverse array of wildlife—from tiny crustaceans to massive blue whales. Spanning the central California coast from San Francisco to Cambria, the sanctuary encompasses pristine beaches, tide pools, kelp forests, steep canyons, and an offshore seamount area home to 34 marine mammal species, over 100 seabird and shorebird species, more than 400 fish species, and numerous invertebrates and algae. This resource aims to facilitate exploration and promote awareness of this invaluable undersea environment.
